Building and managing Bills of Materials for your assemblies
The BOM Viewer is accessible from the SavantPLM sidebar. A BOM (Bill of Materials) is a list of all the components — parts and sub-assemblies — that make up an assembly. Each line item has a component part number, quantity, find number, and unit of measure.
BOMs in SavantPLM are revision-aware — each revision of a part has its own independent BOM.
Enter a part number in the Part # field at the top and click Search. The BOM for the current revision of that part will load. If the part has no BOM yet, editors will see an option to add components.
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Find # | An optional reference designator or balloon number used on engineering drawings to identify this component's position. |
| Component PN | The part number of the component on this BOM line. |
| Name | The name of the component part. |
| Qty | The quantity of this component used in one unit of the parent assembly. Editors can click the edit icon to update the quantity inline. |
| UOM | Unit of measure for the component (e.g. EA, LB, IN). |
| Ext. Cost | Extended cost — the component's unit cost multiplied by quantity. Requires cost data on the component part. |
| Unit Wt / Ext. Wt (Kg) | Shown when you tick Show weights above the table (your choice is remembered in this browser). The component's weight in kilograms and that weight multiplied by quantity. A line marked * is incomplete because some part below it has no weight. Below the toggle, BOM total weight adds up the lines for this assembly and lists any parts that are missing a weight. If the assembly also has a measured weight entered on its part, that is shown with the difference. See Part View for how each assembly's weight is chosen. |
| Where Used | A quick link to the Where Used view for this component, showing all other assemblies that also use it. |
| BOM | If this component is itself an assembly with its own BOM, this button drills down into it. |
| Raw Mat | If this component has a raw material assigned, this button opens the raw material assignment. |
| View Part | Opens this component in the Part View. |
| Delete | Removes this component from the BOM. Visible to Editors only. |
A part cannot be added to its own BOM (circular reference). The system will reject attempts to create circular BOMs.
Click the pencil icon (✎) next to any quantity to edit it inline. Enter the new quantity and click ✓ to save, or ✕ to cancel.
Click the Delete button on any BOM row to remove that component. A confirmation prompt will appear before deletion.
If a component is itself an assembly with its own BOM, a BOM button appears in its row. Click it to navigate down into that sub-assembly's BOM. A breadcrumb trail at the top of the page tracks your path so you can navigate back up.
If a part has been revised and the previous revision had a BOM but the new revision does not, a warning banner appears. Editors can click Copy from Prev Rev to copy all BOM lines from the previous revision to the current one as a starting point.
If your workspace has BOM Changes Require ECO enabled in Admin Settings, editors cannot add, edit, or delete BOM lines on released parts without an active Engineering Change Order (ECO). Attempting to do so will show an error directing you to create an ECO first.
BOM change control applies to released parts only. BOMs on unreleased (in-work) parts can be edited freely regardless of this setting.
