🔬 Prototypes

Tracking prototype requests from creation through completion

🔬 What is a Prototype?

A Prototype is a record that tracks a request to build or obtain prototype samples of a part or product. Prototype records give your team a central place to log what is needed, who requested it, who is responsible for fulfilling it, when it is needed, and what quantity is required.

Prototypes are accessible from the Prototypes link in the SavantPLM sidebar.

📋 Prototype List

The Prototype List shows all prototype requests for your workspace. From here you can:

  • Search by prototype number, title, or part number
  • Filter by completion status — All, Complete, or Incomplete
  • Toggle the completed checkbox for a prototype directly in the list without opening the full edit form
  • Click a prototype number to open its Detail View
  • Edit or delete a prototype (Editors only)

Voided prototypes are hidden from the list by default. To include them, use the status filter.

➕ Creating a Prototype

Click New Prototype in the Prototype List to open the create form. The prototype number is assigned automatically — you cannot change it. Title is the only required field; all other fields are optional and can be filled in later.

After saving, the new prototype appears in the list with a status of Open.

📄 Field Reference

FieldDescription
EPR Number Auto-assigned unique identifier for this prototype request. Read-only after creation.
Title Short description of what is being prototyped. Required.
Models The product model(s) this prototype applies to. Optional.
Priority Urgency level: Low, Medium, High, or Critical. Optional.
Status Current workflow state. See Status below.
Requested By The workspace user who submitted the prototype request. Optional.
Assigned To The workspace user responsible for fulfilling the prototype. Optional.
ECO Number Related Engineering Change Order number, if any. Links to the ECO Detail view. Optional.
Date Required Target date by which the prototype should be completed. Optional.
Date Completed Set automatically when the prototype is marked complete. Cleared if completion is reversed.
Description Long-form details about the prototype request. Optional.
Notes Additional notes or comments. Optional.

🆗 Status

Each prototype has a Status field with four possible values:

  • Open — New request, work has not started. Default when a prototype is created.
  • In Progress — Work is underway.
  • Completed — The prototype has been fulfilled. Set automatically when the completed checkbox is checked.
  • Voided — The request was cancelled or is no longer relevant. Voided prototypes are hidden from the default list view.

Status can be set manually when editing a prototype, or changed to Completed automatically by checking the completed checkbox.

✅ Marking Complete

There are two ways to mark a prototype as complete:

  • Completed checkbox in the list — Check or uncheck the checkbox directly in the Prototype List row without opening the edit form.
  • Completed checkbox in the Detail View — Toggle completion from the full detail/edit view.

When a prototype is marked complete:

  • The Status is automatically set to Completed.
  • The Date Completed is recorded as today's date.

If completion is reversed (unchecked), the Date Completed is cleared. The status is not automatically reset, so you can update it manually if needed.

🔍 Detail View

Clicking a prototype number in the list opens the Detail View, which shows all fields organized into three sections:

  • Identity — EPR number, title, models, priority, status, requested by, assigned to, ECO number, and completed flag.
  • Dates — Created date, date required, and date completed.
  • Notes & Details — Description and notes fields.

ECO numbers shown in the detail view are clickable links that navigate to the ECO Detail view. Editors can click ✎ Edit to switch to edit mode, then ✓ Save Changes to save or Cancel to return to the read-only view.

The topbar also contains a PN List button to view the parts associated with this prototype, and a Print button to open a printable summary of the prototype and its PN List.

📋 PN List

Each prototype has a PN List — a list of the specific part numbers (and revisions) that are needed to build or test the prototype. The PN List is accessed by clicking the PN List button in the topbar of the Detail View, or directly from the PN List button in the Prototype List (shown only when parts have been added).

The PN List table shows the following columns:

ColumnDescription
Part Number The part number added to this prototype request.
Name The part name pulled from the part record.
Current Rev The current released revision of the part as it exists in the part database.
Requested Rev The specific revision that was requested when the part was added to this list. May differ from the current revision if the part has been revised since the prototype was set up.
Class The part class (e.g. Purchased, Manufactured) from the part record.
Status Shows the revision status of this row relative to the part's current revision:
  • If the Requested Rev matches the Current Rev, the part's actual status (e.g. Released) is shown.
  • Old Rev — the Requested Rev is older than the Current Rev. The part has been revised since this request was created.
  • Unreleased — the Requested Rev is newer than the Current Rev. The revision requested does not yet exist in the released database.

Revision ordering follows the sequence: - (dash, the initial revision), then A, B, C…Z, AA, AB…AZ, BA, BB, and so on.

Qty The quantity of this part needed for the prototype.
Notes Any part-specific notes for this prototype request.

The PN List button in the Prototype List is only shown when at least one part has been added to the prototype. If no parts have been added yet, open the Detail View and click the PN List button in the topbar.

➕ Adding Parts to the PN List

From the PN List view, click Add Part to expand the add form. Fill in the following fields and click Add Part to save the row.

FieldDescription
Part Number The part number to add. Must be an existing part in your workspace. Raw materials cannot be added to a prototype PN List.
Revision The revision of the part being requested. A Current Rev checkbox (checked by default) automatically fills this field with the part's current revision when you enter the part number. Uncheck Current Rev to type a custom revision instead — for example, to request a revision that is not yet released.
Qty The quantity needed. Must be a positive whole number (1 or greater).
Notes Optional notes specific to this part on this prototype request.

Rules

  • The same part number can appear more than once on the list only if the revisions are different. For example, you can have PN 10001 at Rev A and PN 10001 at Rev B on the same prototype.
  • Duplicate part number + revision combinations are not allowed. If you try to add a PN that is already on the list with the same revision, an error message is shown.

Editing and Deleting Rows

Each row in the PN List has an Edit button (pencil icon) that opens an inline edit form directly in the table row. You can change the revision, quantity, and notes. The same uniqueness rule applies — you cannot save a change that would create a duplicate PN + revision combination.

To remove a part, click the Delete button (trash icon) on the row. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.

Only Editors can add, edit, or delete parts on the PN List. Viewers can see the list but cannot make changes.

🔒 Access and Permissions

  • All workspace users can view the Prototype List, Detail View, and PN List.
  • Editors only can create, edit, delete, and toggle completion on prototypes, and can add, edit, or delete parts on the PN List.
