📍 Inventory Locations

Setting up the physical locations where parts are stored

Overview

Inventory Locations define the physical places in your facility where parts are stored. They are used when recording inventory balance records, so you always know exactly where stock is held and how much is at each location.

Inventory Locations are found in the SavantPLM sidebar under Inventory → Locations. Only users with the Editor role can add, edit, or delete locations.

Location Hierarchy

Locations are organized in a hierarchy of up to four levels:

Level Description Required Parent
WAREHOUSE Top-level location — a building, warehouse, or site None
ROOM A room, zone, or area within a warehouse Must be under a WAREHOUSE
RACK A shelving unit or pallet rack that holds bins (optional) Under a WAREHOUSE or a ROOM
BIN A specific bin or storage slot where parts are physically kept Under a ROOM or a RACK

Inventory balance is recorded at the BIN level. WAREHOUSEs and ROOMs are organizational containers — you cannot assign inventory directly to them.

Example Layout

Here is an example of how a small warehouse might be set up:

WH-1: Main Warehouse
    └─ RM-1: Shelf Room A
            └─ BIN-00001: (name: A-01)
            └─ BIN-00002: (name: A-02)
            └─ BIN-00003: (name: A-03)
    └─ RM-2: Receiving
            └─ BIN-00004: (name: RECV-01)

WH-2: Off-Site Storage
    └─ RM-3: Main Floor
            └─ BIN-00005: (name: OS-01)

In this example, Main Warehouse and Off-Site Storage are WAREHOUSEs. Every BIN must belong to a ROOM — a ROOM is always required as an intermediate level, even for simple single-room warehouses. Shelf Room A and Receiving are ROOMs inside Main Warehouse, each containing their own bins. Codes are auto-generated; names are optional but recommended for readability.

Adding a Location

  1. Click the lock LOCKED button to unlock the add form.
  2. Enter an optional Name — a descriptive label (e.g. "Main Warehouse", "Shelf Room A").
  3. Select the Level — WAREHOUSE, ROOM, or BIN.
  4. Select a Parent — required for ROOM and BIN levels. The parent dropdown automatically filters to show only valid parent locations based on the level selected.
  5. Enter an optional Description.
  6. Click + Add Location. The code is auto-generated (WH-1, RM-1, BIN-00001, etc.).

To draw a WAREHOUSE or ROOM in 3D, use the Draw floor plan link in its Size column. See Warehouse Builder.

When you select a level, the Parent dropdown automatically updates to show only compatible parents — WAREHOUSEs for ROOMs, and ROOMs for BINs.

Hierarchy Rules

Editing and Deleting

Editing

Click the Edit button on any location row to modify its code, name, level, parent, or description. Click Save to apply changes.

Deleting

Click the Delete button to remove a location. A confirmation prompt will appear before deletion.

A location cannot be deleted if it has inventory balance records associated with it. Remove or move the inventory first, then delete the location.

Inventory Balance

Once your locations are set up, you can record inventory quantities at the BIN level using Inventory → Balance in the portal sidebar. Each balance record ties a part number to a BIN location and stores the quantity on hand.

The Inventory Balance view also supports filtering by location — select a FACILITY, ROOM, or BIN from the location filter to see only the inventory records within that location and all its children.
